◆講演概要

As film scholar Jeffrey Weinstoke notes, “cinematic vampires teach us what it means to be an acceptably sexual man or woman by showing us what it means to be a perversely sexual monster.” (2012) This tradition begins with 1922 Nosferatu and continues into contemporary projections of gender and sexuality onto our vampires of today, particularly those who challenge gender norms for the time period in which they are set. In this presentation, I trace the lineage of the vampire as transgressor of fixed notions of gender and sexual normativity from the various periods of horror filmic iterations of the vampires, beginning with Bram Stoker’s portrayal of Dracula in the eponymous 1878 text into subsequent filmic transpositions, I continue with adaptations of 1872 Sheridan Le Fanu text Carmilla, and link these representations to the more familiar vampires from the show “True Blood,” which aired from 2008-2014 and the 2008 Swedish Horror Film Let the Right One In. These films challenge the very notion of gender by illustrating its fluidity as a concept, but one that is a comfortable realm for the social misfit that is the vampire.
